The Art of Computer Maintenance

June 25th, 2007

What is the Art of Computer Maintenance ? It’s the difference between you and me. It’s what makes my PC fast, reliable and long lasting (graphics cards excepted) . It’s an oil change for your PC, a set of good habits and practices that are cheap, quick and easy. Some of the most important things are:

  1. Defragmenting your hard disks
  2. Cleaning your PC of dust buildup
  3. Replacing system fans

Spammers that kill!

E-Mail Scam Includes Hit-Man Threat - Federal Bureau of Investigation

Have you ever received threats from some rap-blasting oregano-selling sticker-hoarding honda-driving meatbag ? Well now you can get the same thrills without leaving your desk! Death threats by email, from someone you don’t know!

What I find absolutely hilarious is that the FBI is telling people “not to worry about it”. I’m not scared of some douche killing me over the intertubes, but I’d very much like to:

  1. Sue Mr. Douche for issuing verbal threats, which is not only anti-social, it’s outright illegal!
  2. Have his lovely pale white

Why do computers still suck ?

June 20th, 2007

I’m not talking about Acer, Sony or any other scam shop’s unreliable products. I mean computing in general. Why is it that in 2007, computers are still really flakey and crash-prone, they’re still quite a bit complicated for the average person, and they’re still a royal pain in the ass to program and debug ?

Programmers spend all their time writing boring repetitive crap and working around lame problems. Technicians replace a gazillion power supplies and hard drives that fail almost predictably. Users waste time re-learning stuff every couple of years, because something was “upgraded”.

It seems to… Read the rest of this entry »

How to Stop Warez Pirates: Ask Them Nicely!

How to Stop Warez Pirates: Ask Them Nicely | TorrentFreak

It’s all in the headline, folks! It’s an article about an independent software developer who simply asked a warez group to stop pirating his software. Not surprisingly, they immediately complied with his request. You see, the “real” pirates don’t do it for profit, they do it just for the hell of it, because there is a huge demand for warez and cracks and all that fun stuff. This guy wrote a really cool program to do light shows and real-time video effects (sounds familiar ?), so it’s just natural that someone noticed and decided to share this very neat thing with everyone… Read the rest of this entry »

Church of England upset over cathedral’s depiction in Sony game - ArsTechnica

Church of England upset over cathedral’s depiction in Sony game

Ah yes, the Church of England, brainchild of King Henry VIII, one of history’s most outrageously shameful crackheads, right up there with Rasputin and Jerry Falwell.

I’ll keep it quick, so someone please explain to me what the difference is between a gunfight in a church, and a gunfight in any other building ? The way I see it, a cathedral is a place considered holy by only those people who either adhere to the faith or acknowledge its existence. To everyone else, it’s a… Read the rest of this entry »

TorrentSpy ordered to start tracking visitors - CNet News.com

June 9th, 2007

The article at News.com.com.com.com :P

You’ve got to love California and their Hollywood legal system. A federal judge has ordered TorrentSpy.com to start tracking its visitors’ habits, as part of the discovery process in their suit against the MPAA.

It just keeps getting better and better (and by that I mean WORSE). You see, the MPAA doesn’t even have any proof of copyright infringement. They’re asking the defendant to provide self-incriminating evidence, which is a direct violation of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

This sets one ugly precedent. It’s yet another gross distortion… Read the rest of this entry »

Passive income - a long term goal

June 9th, 2007

Who is Bill ? At one point I was defined as “an angry coagulate of superior intellect and vast technoculture”.
Well yes, I am those things. More importantly, I’m a guy who has hardly ever cared for tradition. One time-honored tradition of the human race is to work until you’re very old and/or dead. Give 40 years to a company, build up a retirement fund, and hope to have enough life in you to enjoy it. I consider that mentality obsolete in the 21st century… Read the rest of this entry »

Server glitches and some quickies

June 9th, 2007

It’s been quiet on my blog this week, mainly because I’ve been overwhelmed with other things. New York was one thing, server problems were another. Just a few days ago I was bitching about binary packages on Linux, sure enough I ran into a massive problem while installing some little thing, whose dependencies clobbered some of my custom configured software. GRR!
On to the Quickies… Read the rest of this entry »

Fear and loathing in Las Linux

June 4th, 2007

Disclaimer: I’m a prick. No, really! I complain all the time.

Today, I’m going to complain about Linux, A-GAIN! Actually my gripe isn’t so much with the Linux kernel or community, I’m specifically irritated at Redhat, Fedora, CentOS and any other RPM-based distro that relies on “yum” for installing and updating packages… Read the rest of this entry »

Encryption vendor claims AACS infringes its patents, sues Sony

Encryption vendor claims AACS infringes its patents, sues Sony
The title says it all, but the best part is that the patent holder is a Canadian firm! What’s even better is that the US National Security Agency has already licensed the very same patents Sony is accused of infringing upon.
I’m normally not one to support patent issues, particularly when they deal with software algorithms, but in this case I’m willing to look the other way :)… Read the rest of this entry »
